Sensei Cline's Visit to Sacramento

by Emil Valdés

Saturday, April 29 at the Sacramento dojo, a scheduled visit by Northwest Region director, Sensei Cathy Cline was not the usual technical clinics and promotional examination visit. It was definitely a fun filled ISKF Northwest Region event with some interesting highlights. As early as 8:30am, student members in the host dojo’s Elite Competition Program were already huffing and puffing doing their conditioning drills followed by intense kumite drills non-stop ending at 11:30am. At 12:00noon, they were lined up to be joined by ISKF members from Napa, San Francisco, Humboldt and South San Francisco for Sensei Cline's classes.

At 2:00pm, Sensei Cline observed a couple of exhibition kumite matches using the Olympic 8 point system and judging process. This is in preparation for the 2020 Olympic events. Whether the IOC officially accepts Japanese traditional karate as the demonstration sports for the 2020 summer Olympic Games or not, these Sacramento Shotokan karate competitors will be ready. As always, it is such a treat to have our director come for a visit. Thank you, Sensei!

Sensei Haight's Visit to Moscow, ID

by Kris Haight

In April, I had the pleasure of visiting our Palouse Shotokan club in Moscow, Idaho. We had a wonderful time training, talking about karate, and sharing meals together. I want to acknowledge the excellent instruction the students at all their locations are getting—it was visible in their etiquette as well as their technique. Scott Randall, Glenda and Brian Thie, and Norm Prendergast—each of you are doing a stellar job teaching Shotokan karate following the ways of Masters Funakoshi and Okazaki. Finally, a special thank you to Sensei Matthew Thomas for his help in the black belt class.
